Cabbage Roses

I'm working on a new mixed-media art piece (still very much In Progress, so no pics yet) that I decided to turn into a depiction of a full-blown cabbage rose. The next step was to go a Google search of cabbage rose images, so I could use colors and details that were somewhat realistic (I'm not a rose expert, by any means). That's when I found something quite interesting - there are two kinds of "cabbage" roses:

  • The first is the floral cabbage rose, which is an old-fashioned variety of genuine rose. It has many petals densely packed so the shape of it resembles a cabbage head.
  • The second is what I call the vegetable cabbage rose. Also known as ornamental cabbage or ornamental kale, it's a variety of these familiar vegetables that's bred for beauty rather than flavor - although apparently it's still edible!

The two types of cabbage rose often look so similar, it's difficult to tell one from the other in photos. Here are some pictures to show the range of these interesting members of the plant kingdom:

The first two pictures show the floral cabbage rose. The second two show the vegetable "roses." And now I know what details and colors to use to finish my art piece~!

Friday Finds: More Spring Things on Zazzle!

And here's my second and final roundup of the spring goods like mugs, bandannas, cards and more, from Zazzle, leading purveyor of print-on-demand products and gifts. Full disclosure: I do NOT like spring! Between the allergies and the time change and so on, it leaves me miserably longing to have fall, my favorite time of year, back again. But I can still appreciate these pretty flower and butterfly designs. There's a bunny, too. It makes spring seem not quite so bad!

Today's Picture 05: Fantasy Orange Flowers

Also known as "Tricia's Flowers," this mixed-media art piece depicts a vibrant bouquet of orange flowers and green leaves with a hint of shine and glitter. It was inspired by a friend who loved the color orange, and is created in her honor.

This original work of art measures 10 x 8 inches and looks good displayed either horizontally or vertically. It's listed at my Zibbet store.

Update: This original canvas has been sold, but you can see more of my Fine Art Originals on Zibbet.

It's also available as prints, pillows, tote bags and more - see the P.O.D. version HERE at my Society6 store.

Friday Finds: Spring Things on Zazzle

It's still Friday in my time zone, so I can still post some Friday Finds! I'll make up for the late-in-the-day posting by helping y'all get a jump on Spring with the fabulous spring things from Zazzle:

Today's Picture 04: Out of Bounds

Today's picture is an abstract that evokes  the rough-edged process of breaking boundaries, or expanding beyond limits - like a flower unfolding, perhaps. It's done in mixed media on 5x7 inch canvas board. It's a nice piece to add to your collection of small works of art.

Today's Picture 03: For Whatever Reason

Today's picture is a delightful little abstract that questions the whys and wherefores which sometimes bog us down. It measures 5x7 inches and is done in mixed media on canvas board.

Today's Picture 02: Pop Art Cat No.2

And we're off - I just put my first piece of art up for auction on the Daily Paintworks site! It's another compelling feline image, patterned after my cat LuvLee. Mixed media on heavy paper, fits a 5x7 inch frame or mat.

What happened to Pop Art Cat No.1, you ask? The original sold before I could even open my membership at Daily Paintworks! However, the Number 1 cat design is available on prints, mugs, rugs t-shirts, pillows and more at my Society6 shop. See it here: Pop Art Cat No.1 by Jan4insight.

Update: This piece has been withdrawn from sale, but there's a new, improved version coming soon!  You can see all of my Fine Art Originals on Zibbet.

Friday Finds: The Joys of Abstract - Art from Society6

As an artist, I enjoy doing abstracts because of the freedom it gives me to concentrate on pure color, texture, and form. But it's in design that I think abstracts really come into their own. Whether the abstract is precisely printed on a small item like a card or a phone case - or exploded to cover the expanse of a shower curtain or blanket - it takes design and decorative art to a whole new level, imnsho.

Show below of some of my picks for abstract art on products. Click on the images to go directly to the product page. These designs are also available on apparal, mugs, rugs, pillows, and more from Society6.

First photos of my Resident Roadrunners

A few days ago I finally got some visible photographs of the two Greater Roadrunners that have taken up residence in my yard. I knew photographing them would be tricky, because I only see the birds briefly each day, often just before sunset when the daylight is fading, and on top of all that - their colors blend in with the ground and vegetation. Fortunately I got lucky one evening last week, and, while the pics aren't the best quality, they do show enough of my "little feathered dinosaurs" to give you the idea:

Roadrunner enjoying the last rays of the setting sun.

Why do roadrunners cross the road???

Can you find the roadrunners in this picture? There are two.

If you can't find the roadrunners in the last pic, try clicking on it to enlarge it. You can also see the "answer" HERE :)

Today's Picture 01: Pop Art Cat No. 1

Introducing the very first result of my new artistic venture! I recently became aware of an approach known as "daily painting." The idea is to produce small, original works of art on a regular basis - not necessarily every single day (not gonna happen!) but frequently and often. And when the day's art piece is finished, you post it for sale and write a blog post about it.

I thought, hmmm - I can do that. The process fulfills several goals I've had for some time (sell original works, make money) and what better way to spend productive time that by making creative imaginings real. So, without further ado, here is my first Almost-Daily Picture:
