Too Many Martyrs: Tribute to the victims of 01.08.11

I have been following the tragic and horrific shooting that took place in Tucson, AZ, at the public event held by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Six people, more injured, Rep. Giffords shot through head, yet as of this writing has survived through surgery although she remains unconscious. This is sad blow not only to victims, families, and friends, but to our democracy and public discourse. As someone said, we are Giffords now.

I've cried and I've posted and I've linked all across the Internet today, trying to find some sense of community around this. The words to this song by the late, great Phil Ochs - even though written about the Medgar Evers shooting in Mississippi four decades ago - seem oddly appropriate now, and I offer it in tribute to those who died or were wounded:

I, too, have been following the news and find particularly chilling the short bio of the 9-year old girl who was killed. Born on Sept 11, 2001, she was recently elected to an office at school, and because she had become interested in holding office/public service, she decided to attend the Giffords event. To me, there is tremendous and tragic symbolism in the bookends of her short life.

Very sad state of affairs. One cannot make sense of the senseless, but we all must carry one in faith and hope. Maryanne
